Blistering Barnacles

Today’s focus is on blister packs, not the gentle ones that protect tablets and capsules, but the more robust ones that many commercial products (small electronic gadgets for example) are encased in.

These strong plastic containers sure have advantages. They are tough, clear, showing the product inside. The protect well, stand a lot of wear and tear. They act as a seal, ensure the buyer knows the product he has got is new! But that is about as far as it goes.

These plastic monsters are a menace. For one they are exceedingly difficult to open. Yo need a strong pair of scissors to cut around. And yet you may need to use strength to tear or prise it apart. It can cause you bodily harm. The sharp stiff plastic can easily cut through your skin. But no one seems to care.

That brings me to the point. Why do not the companies that package their product in such packaging material have an easily way to remove the product from it? Perhaps some form of perforation to tear away the plastic. Perhaps simply two layers that are pinned at a couple of points, that should be easy to open (think of plastic egg packaging). The possiblities are there but is anyone listening?
